I first started assistant teaching in dance at age 11. I then began to teach professionally in my early twenties to the present. I moved to the U.S. from my native Brazil to join Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey circus as a professional dancer.
I have a Master of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of Arizona. As a professional dancer, I’ve had extensive experience with a wide variety of somatic/movement modalities, including the Alexander Technique and the Floor-Barre Technique. I discovered the Gyrotonic® Expansion System 15 years ago, and began teaching in 2011. I immediately fell in love with this beautifully crafted art form, which allows us to find true strength while creating space and freedom in our bodies. I feel that this system is uniquely able to help one achieve a fully expressive body and spirit. I then added Pilates teaching to my repertoire in 2016. I'm an enthusiastic and passionate teacher of movement. My teaching style is mix of a whole bunch of things together in a big sauce. It’s informed by inclusivity, improvisation and curious exploration/experimentation. I like to employ balanced pacing and the use of imagery, some of which comes from my my modern dance background. My intention is to teach from a ‘beginner’s mind’, building on the basics to discover ways to go deeper, broader, wider. By layering up the cues, while being attentive and responsive to what’s going on with my students’ bodies, I’m able to create a workout that’s a balance of both soft and hard. I’m a protective mama-bear, but also I encourage clients to test the waters outside of their comfort zone. I find it soul-satisfying to work with people who are invested as students. I enjoy watching them walk out the door with the endorphins flowing. I want them to leave class feeling more comfortable and grounded in their own skin, having had the pleasure of feeling good while moving as they achieve their own goals. |
Mirela is challenging, engaging, and professional. She knows how to create progressively more challenging sessions. There's nothing more exciting than not being able to do a particular movement, and then one day, it's there! — CHRISTIANE HENNING, CENTERLINE STUDENT |
Mirela’s the best! She’s knowledgeable, motivating, and kind. I so appreciate that she strives to have a clear understanding of each of her clients' bodies. — CHARLENE DEC, CENTERLINE STUDENT |
After working with Mirela for a year, I can attest I got all that I was looking for—and more. Not only am I feeling stronger and more balanced on both legs—I had nerve damage in one leg—I also recover more quickly after other activities. Most of all, I feel centered and fluid as I maneuver this year’s share of health issues and life stressors. — INGRID BREGAND, CENTERLINE STUDENT |
Mirela is a fantastic teacher. Dedicated, thoughtful, compassionate, she’s interested in the whole person. — CONNIE BELL, CENTERLINE STUDENT |
My daughter started working with Mirela at Centerline primarily to increase her flexibility for ballet. Mirela's taken the time to really get to know my daughter and to listen to what she wants to accomplish and has tailored a program for her. — LAURA D., CENTERLINE STUDENT |
