rudy avalosmartial arts, qi gong, and meditation instructorTo me, moving well comes from connecting your body and mind, so they can work as one. |
My students say that I have a strong presence. They describe my teaching style as energetic, optimistic, dynamic, and motivating.
I like to have fun when I'm teaching—laughter is sometimes the best medicine! I believe in honor and respect, and in humbling oneself before one another. At different moments, we are all students and teachers. My passion for Martial Arts was born when I was 6 years old. I remember watching Bruce Lee movies and feeling a spark of passion, confidence, and emotional connection that's stayed with me to this day.
I started training in martial arts in 2003, at the Academy of World Martial Arts. I'd grown tired of questioning my own ability to protect myself, and I also needed an outlet for what I call 'warrior energy'. I'd already been training in Aikido, which is a martial art based on redirecting the opponent’s attacks. I wanted to expand my knowledge and learn more about movement, footwork, and the more unorthodox styles of martial arts. |
I quickly became passionate about Muay Thai kickboxing as well as many other martial arts. Since, my passion has only deepened. Muay Thai truly enhances our mind-body connection, agility, spatial awareness, cardio, and our ability to protect ourselves. Useful not only for self-defense, martial arts help one to feel more alive and confident.
After training in the martial arts for a couple of years, I experienced a near-fatal neck injury. My training had become very aggressive, acting as an outlet for anger from a troubled childhood. This injury humbled me—physically as well as emotionally. I was suffering excruciating pain, and wasn't interested in pursuing surgical or pharmaceutical avenues. Searching for natural pain relief, I discovered the healing powers of Qi Gong and meditation.
Throughout my studies in the US as well as in China, I've learned many movement, energy, and healing disciplines that have deepened my grounding as a practitioner and teacher; I'm able to work with the physical body as well as the energetic body. As a result, my teaching is very comprehensive. My approach to meditation is multicultural and I pull from various subtle-energy modalities. I most enjoy working with my clients and students to guide them to tune into the connection between their mind and body.
Outside of the studio, I enjoy spending time with my beautiful girlfriend, my amazing son, my crybaby dog, and my needy cat. I also enjoy dancing, listening to music, training, reading, traveling, metaphysical studies. And my guilty pleasure is binge-watching Netflix shows.
