What is the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®?

The Gyrotonic Expansion System was created in the late 1970s by Juliu Horvath, a professional dancer. After suffering debilitating injuries while dancing for the Houston Ballet, Horvath began exploring how to regain his strength and mobility.

​The method Horvath developed includes GYROKINESIS®, practiced with a mat and stool, and GYROTONIC®, which applies the same principles on a suite of highly specialized equipment. Both consist of sequences of expansive exercises where the student moves in sensuous, spiraling, circular patterns, flowing from one repetition to the next. Movements are coordinated with breath and take you elegantly through a natural range of motion, with no compression or high impact.

​What is a GYROTONIC® workout like?

Begin by moving the spine in all directions—arch, curl, twist right, twist left, and side bend each way.

Continue through families of organic exercises that simultaneously strengthen and open the feet, ankles, knees, hips, abdominals, shoulders, wrists, and hands—your entire system.
The innovative suite of specialized GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® equipment is extremely adjustable, allowing it to be both supportive and appropriately challenging for each body. The intention is to promote ease of motion while working with resistance. Movements are satisfyingly dynamic, expansive, continuous, serpentine and three-dimensional.

​You'll deeply nourish and stimulate your circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory, and nervous systems. After regular workouts, you’ll experience freedom in your spine, lean and toned muscles, space in your joints, better overall health, and dynamic well-being.
